Surviving a 7.3 Magnitude Earthquake

Yesterday was really a ‘big’ day for me because my hosting was down and I couldn’t do anything with my blogs. And then the worse thing happened, all of a sudden I heard noises all around my house, the floor was trembling – I could feel as if something was moving down there – and the walls were shaking heavily followed by collapsing objects to the floor. It took me a few seconds to realize that we were facing a powerful earthquake. I quickly grabbed my youngest son and shouted to my wife and our eldest son to run outside as soon as possible. When we reached there we found some of our neighbors – all women – standing and trembling in panic look. My wife was cooking when the earthquake rattled our neighborhood so I had to sneak inside the house to turn the stove off once the earthquake intensity decreased.

After leaving the kitchen I decided to save some of our valuable items. I could only think to save my laptop because all of my works were there. My wife followed me and she collected our cell phones, documents and wallets and put them in my car (you see, a man need a woman to take care of the financial matter even in the worst situation like this ) while I was thinking to secure my electric guitar and amplifier …….

And then the earthquake struck again – of course before I managed to grab my electric guitar. I quickly ran to my car, drove it to a square and parked there waiting for the earthquake to stop. What a great experience!

Local tsunami warnings were issued for coastal areas within several hundred kilometres of the quake’s epicentre soon after it struck, but were withdrawn about half an hour later.

After the earthquake’s gone we checked our house and quite surprisingly we didn’t find any major damages or cracks at all. Thanks God our house survived a 7.3 magnitude earthquake!

A lesson learn from this incident is that I should have an Emergency Response Plan in the house. I used to practice this a lot when I was in the oilfield but I failed to bring it home. Lucky me nothing bad happened.

How to Find Backlinks to Your Blog

Most of us Alex Jeffreys students have installed the widlink plugin to help getting traffic to the blogs. It’s been around 2 weeks after I installed it and this morning I check how many blogs linked to my blog – the one you are reading now. You can use the search engines to find backlinks to your blog but the results vary greatly.

Have a look at what Google told me about my backlinks:

If you want to see your backlinks on Google just type in link:http://yourdomain.com in your Google search box. As you can see from my result above Mr. G doesn’t really want to tell me how many blogs or sites are linking to my blog. It only shows me a link from Technorati.

Yahoo! is better. Here is the screenshot of what it gives me:

If you want to use Yahoo! to find backlinks to your blog just go to siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com and type in http://yourdomain.com in the Explore URL box. Yahoo! told me there are at least 72 sites or blogs linking to my blog, most of them come from Alex Jeffreys students’ blogs. Note that Yahoo! may ask for your Yahoo! ID to enter this site. If you have a Yahoo! e-mail you then you just input the ID and the password of your e-mail account.

The best result I got is from the Backlink Checker. Here is the screenshot of my backlinks:

I like Backlink Checker because it gives me the Google Page Rank of the sites linking to my blog. Backlink Checker told me that I currently have 69 sites or blog linking to my blog. The number is roughly the same as the number Yahoo! told me so at least I have an idea about the number of sites linking to this blog. I currently have links from 2 blogs with PR4, one blog with PR2 and one blog with PR1. The PR1 blog belongs to Garry Parkes while the other 3 blogs are not Alex Jeffreys related blogs.
