If you decide to build your opt list there will be two common forms of opt-in email:

Single Opt-in Email (Unconfirmed Opt-in)

When a new subscriber gives his/her email address through your blog or website no further action is taken to verify that this email address belong to the person. If the person receives your emails never sent his/her email address or if your emails landed on the wrong persons due to typo errors they will consider your mailing list as spam.

Double Opt-in Email (Confirmed Opt-in)

Unlike the single opt-in email, when a person gives his/her email address through your blog or website a confirmation email is sent to verify whether the email owner sent it on his/her own will and whether the email address given is valid. This ensures that no person can subscribe someone else out of malice or error. The new subscriber must respond to the confirmation e-mail to be added to the list.

Because single opt-in requires the visitors to enter their emails and send them right to the page you want to send them to you will get more visitors registered in your list. However some people may just give their secondary email address they set up for this purpose and they rarely check them.

You will get less subscribers with double opt-in but it will save you more trouble because by using this you are able to avoid being accused of spamming someone. Nowadays people sign up for so many things online and sometimes they forget what they signed up for in the past. If they hit the ‘spam’ button for this reason you are still be covered because you have proves that they have previously agree to join your list. You don’t have this prove with single opt-in. Also if you choose double opt-in you will get a better quality of prospect that is verified and using a primary e-mail address.

Revealing the details of your recipients
People join your list because they trust you and they want something useful by joining your list. Don’t misuse them or they will sue you. That simple.

Spamming people in your Opt List
It may look contradictory. You have people’s permission to send them bulk email meaning that you are not a spammer. However the way you send them promotional email sometimes makes you no differ from those spammers.

I remember last time I joined a blogging course because the guru had promised me to send out his video tutorials every month but I got nothing in the second month and instead I received another offer that was not of his product and had nothing to do with his blogging course. I immediately signed off his list. He has quite a big name but I don’t care. How should I believe his methods worked if he still promoting somebody’s product in the mid of the course? He was just spamming me with other products I didn’t need. The worst thing was he did not send me the product that I already paid for. Looks to me that this ‘guru’ is just another ordinary internet marketer trying to maximize his own profit.

Concealing your identity in your email marketing messages
We have to clearly put our identity in every email we send to our list. I was not comfortable with this at the beginning but I realized that everybody hate spammers and spammers use fake identities in their emails. It left us no other option. We have to brand ourselves and that means people deserve the right to know who we are and where we live.

Leaving no opt-out option in your email messages
People are free to join and leave our list anytime they want to. Make sure your emails have this opt-out links. It is normally located at the very bottom of your messages. BTW you wouldn’t want to move them up because people might mistakenly click them and quit your list.

Perhaps you will say that your blog attracts hundreds or even thousands of visitors every day so you don’t see the needs of utilizing this opt-in email but the truth is all the internet marketing big players create money with their lists. That’s why you always hear some gurus religiously saying the same common refrain: “the money is in the list, the money is in the list, the money is in the list…”

And what happen if Google dances and out of the blue your blog is nowhere found on the big G pages anymore? There goes your business forever because if nobody can see your blog or website the chance is you need to either start from all over again which takes time because organic traffic develops slowly, or you buy traffic from Google which is also prone to the famous Google Slap. Such problem can be prevented easily if you know the beauty of list building. Start collecting your visitors’ emails by offering them something useful. To start building your list you can join an Autoresponder company, i.e Aweber, GetResponse or one of their private labels. It will cost you less than 20 bucks per month with the start up package but believe me it is worth paying.

Serious bloggers don’t want to lose their visitors or prospects because they know the importance of them. Doesn’t matter whether you are actively promoting products as an affiliate or you rely solely on the Google Adsense, you need these visitors to come and click on your affiliate links or on your Adsense links. But traffic doesn’t necessarily means conversion. You can get a lot of traffic but nobody clicks on your money links. Yes,this is very normal. The success rate in internet marketing world is said to be 1% only so you have to follow what the 1% guys do. With list building you have your own market and instead of waiting for traffic and clicks you just send your emails with your promotion links embedded to all the people in your list, all at a single mouse click.
